IRB Fee
December 11, 2007
Review of research protocols involving humans is an unfunded federal mandate. No
provision to the institution is made for the expenses incurred. Federal F&A
analysis does not permit the inclusion of IRB overhead in rate negotiations.
To help defray the administrative costs of running an IRB, most AAU public
universities charge IRB fees. Rarely do these fees actually cover the cost of
doing business, but they can be helpful. Charges are limited to
industry-sponsored protocols.
Effective January 1, 2008, Rutgers University will start to charge for new
protocols sponsored by industry. Protocols on existing awards will not be
affected.
Fee schedule:
• Initial Review - $1,700
• Continuing Review - $800
• Modifications - $ 275
UMDNJ uses the same fee schedule. Again, this affects industry only. Federal,
foundation and other sponsors will not be affected. Please be sure to include
IRB fees in your budgets as a separate line item, listed as a stand-alone
*after* directs and indirects are added together.
