1. New Faculty/Staff Orientation: Research Administration

DATE: Wednesday, October 24, 2007
TIME: 9:00 - 11:00 AM (followed by poster session)
PLACE: Alampi Room, Marine Sciences Building, Cook Campus

If you are unable to register please come any way. All are welcome!

This orientation is for new faculty and staff on research administration at Rutgers University. Participating departments include the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, Division of Grant & Contract Accounting, Office of Corporate Liaison & Technology Transfer and Corporate & Foundation Relations. Each office will give a broad overview of their services and responsibilities.

I’m new to research at Rutgers?  Where do I start?

This question and others will be addressed by representatives from both the pre-and post-award research offices and other Rutgers professionals involved in fostering research at Rutgers.

  • How can we help you find funding from federal, state and private sources?
  • How do we help you with proposal preparation and submission of your proposals to external sponsors?
  • Now that I have received an award, who sets up my account and how do I access the funds?
  • What are Rutgers' copyright and intellectual property policies and procedures?
  • How do I navigate the compliance regulations and requirements?
  • Who can help me raise seed money for new initiatives?

Please join us and meet the RU personnel that can answer these questions and help make your research experience more efficient and productive.  Q&A and valuable one-on-one contact with various research professionals can be made at the poster session, which immediately follows the presentations.

3. NIH Loan Repayment Program

NIH is inviting health professionals engaged in biomedical and behavioral research to apply online for a loan repayment award. The loan repayment programs (LRPs) are a vital component of our nation’s efforts to recruit and retain highly qualified professionals to careers in research.

NIH annually awards loan repayment contracts to approximately 1,600 health professionals with an average award of $52,000. More than 50% of the awards are made to individuals less than 5 years out of school. Approximately 40% of all new applicants are funded and 70% of renewals are funded.

The LRP application cycle is open through December 1. NIH will repay up to $35,000 annually of qualified educational debt for health professionals pursuing careers in one of the five Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs). The programs also provide coverage for Federal and state tax liabilities.

To qualify, applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree, devote an average of 20 hours per week or more to research funded by a non-profit organization, university, or government entity (NIH grant support is not required). Applicants must also have outstanding educational loan debt equal to at least 20% of their institutional base salary and be U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

Please share this e-mail with the researchers in your organization who may benefit from LRP participation.

All applications for 2008 awards must be submitted online by 8:00 p.m. EST, December 1, 2007.

To access the online application or for program information, please visit the LRP Web site at www.lrp.nih.gov. For assistance call the Helpline at 866.849.4047 or send email inquiries to lrp@nih.gov.

This talk will describe some of the basic visualization algorithms for 2D, 3D and 4D scientific data , including data from computational fluid dynamics, oceanography, geology, medical and biological simulations and observations. The available software and libraries that are used for visualization will also be presented. While the talk will focus on scientific visualization, there will be some discussion on information visualization and visual analytics. Finally, current research areas will be described as well as ongoing research at Rutgers.

Deborah Silver is a professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
