Grants.gov Hands-on Training Schedule
ORSP has scheduled
additional hands-on training sessions in the use of Grants.gov to prepare
grant applications. Although these sessions will focus on the application
kit required for NIH programs, this application kit is similar to those used
by other sponsors. Workshop participants will begin the preparation of the
administrative portions of a federal grant application during this workshop.
The workshops will take
place in the ASB
II Computer Lab,
Room 130 on Route 1, Cook Campus. Seating is limited to 15
participants per class. If you register and subsequently can not attend,
please cancel your registration so that others may attend. After you
register, you will receive an email from ORSP with additional class
information and requirements.
To register,
go to
http://uhr.rutgers.edu/profdevenroll and then select the Research &
Sponsored Programs link to pick a date.
If you don't have a NET ID or have trouble
registering, please send email to
profdev@hr.rutgers.edu and you will be manually enrolled.

NIH Offers Manufacturing
Assistance Program to SBIR Phase II Awardees
Notice Number:
NOT-OD-08-025
Release Date: December 28, 2007
The purpose of this Notice is to announce the
availability of a Manufacturing Assistance Program (MAP) for NIH SBIR Phase II
awardees from 2003 to the present.
The Manufacturing Assistance Program is one of
the NIH Technical Assistance Programs for helping SBIR awardees transition their
SBIR-developed technologies into the marketplace. The goal of MAP is to help
identify, address, and develop a strategy to overcome the manufacturing issues
related to the commercialization of SBIR-developed products.
In a partnership with the National Institute of
Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP)
program (http://www.mep.nist.gov),
participants will have access to MEP’s nationwide network of non-profit
manufacturing centers. Each participant will be assigned to a center that will
provide technical support needed to move to a developmental stage that requires
decisions in manufacturing transition strategies. This can include, but is not
limited to:
- method of scale up;
- cost estimation;
- quality control;
- prototyping;
- design for manufacturability;
- facility design;
- process development/ improvement;
- vendor identification and selection;
- plant layout;
- other similar issues.
Dawnbreaker, Inc., a business consulting firm in
Rochester, NY, will manage the program and coordinate the efforts with the MEP
centers.
All NIH SBIR awardees (grantees and contractors)
that have received a Phase II award in the last five fiscal years (FY 03 – 08)
are eligible to participate. Participants must, however, meet the SBIR small
business eligibility criteria as described in the current SBIR Parent Funding
Opportunity Announcement available from the NIH Small Business Funding
Opportunities website
http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/sbir.htm. Previous participants of any
of NIH’s Technical Assistance Programs (i.e., Pilot Manufacturing Assistance,
Commercialization Assistance, Niche Assessment), may participate, however, the
same SBIR award may not be used. Please note that this program is not available
to STTR awardees.

Department
of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Announces $10 million for Predoctoral
Awards.
The Breast
Cancer Research Program (BCRP) Predoctoral Traineeship Award supports the
training of promising graduate students studying breast cancer under the
guidance of a designated mentor for careers in breast cancer research. Under
this award mechanism, the predoctoral trainee is considered the Principal
Investigator (PI) and, as such, should write the proposal with appropriate
direction from the mentor.
Proposals
should emphasize:
-
The PI’s talent, potential, and
commitment to breast cancer research,
-
The mentor’s qualifications and
experience in breast cancer research,
-
The strength of the training program
in breast cancer research, and
-
The institution’s commitment to
training future leaders in breast cancer research.
a) The Predoctoral Traineeship
Award should support the PI during dissertation research rather than during
rotations or basic course work. Funding for Predoctoral Traineeship Awards
can be requested for up to $30,000 per year for direct costs. Direct costs
in excess of the stipend must be used as direct support for the PI and may
not be used for research costs. It is expected that the mentor will have
adequate funding to support the PI’s research.
