1. NSF CAREER Proposal Development Presentation

The ORSP is sponsoring its 6th annual NSF CAREER AWARD WORKSHOP. The purpose is to provide valuable information to faculty submitting a proposal to the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program (http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5262).

NSF’s CAREER Award is prestigious and opens doors for further funding opportunities. This workshop will support faculty in obtaining these awards by giving them knowledge and insight to compete effectively. The workshop is given by faculty for faculty and, in addition to providing valuable information, is intended to help create a network or “community” of CAREER awardees (past, present and future) who can be a source of help and guidance to others seeking these awards.

Dr. Michael Pazzani, VP for Research & Graduate & Professional Education, will host the workshop. 
Dr. Sylvia Spengler, Program Director - Information Integration & Informatics (III) Cluster of NSF, will be the guest speaker.  Her talk is titled, "NSF Career Awards: An Overview." 
Dr. Monica Devanas
from the Center for the Advancement of Teaching will present broader impacts and outreach.

There will also be a panel of faculty from various disciplines who have recently received the CAREER award. Panelists will give brief accountings of their submission experience followed by discussion and Q&A.

2. Revision: Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Stipend and Other Budgetary Levels Effective for Fiscal Year 2007

This Notice revises and clarifies NOT-OD-07-052.  It explains that the fiscal year (FY) 2007 Training Related Expenses previously announced are applicable only for new and competing renewal institutional Kirschstein-NRSA awards made in FY 2007 and for non-competing institutional training awards in FY 2007 that received competing awards in FY 2006.  It also clarifies that the FY 2007 institutional allowances for fellows apply only to competing individual Kirschstein-NRSA awards made in FY 2007.

The stipend levels for FY 2007 Kirschstein-NRSA awards for undergraduate, predoctoral and postdoctoral trainees and fellows remain the same as in FY 2006, as shown in the table below.  The new Training Related Expenses for trainees and the Institutional Allowance for individual fellows for FY 2007 (previously announced in NOT-OD-06-093) are also summarized below.

The budgetary categories described in this Notice are effective only for Kirschstein-NRSA awards made with FY 2007 funds.  Retroactive adjustments or supplementation of stipends or other budgetary categories with Kirschstein-NRSA funds for an award made prior to October 1, 2006 are not permitted.

3.  Particle Characterization Information

Beckman Coulter, Inc. has launched http://coultercounter.com. The new online source, dedicated to particle characterization applications and support, is specially designed to provide researchers, scientists and engineers in numerous industries with valuable information. Particle size distribution analysis, particle counting, zeta potential, submicron particle size distribution analysis and BET surface area and pore size distribution analysis are just some of the topics that can be found. You will also find a section on our applications laboratory and what it can offer to help you with applications, methods development and lab analyses in general.

4. NJIT Hosts Workshop - Invention to Venture

This all-day workshop is a special edition of Invention to Venture (I2V) developed for university faculty/staff and other professional researchers. I2V workshops focus on technology entrepreneurship, or the act of bringing great new technologies to market.

This event is a joint initiative of NCIIA with New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Rowan University, Farleigh Dickinson University, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey along with their partners, the NJ Economic Development Authority, the New Jersey Knowledge Initiative, the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology and the Foundation of UMDNJ.

· Learn about lecturing and research opportunities in 150 countries
· Get advice on which country to apply to and how to make contacts abroad
· Learn how to prepare the Fulbright application
· Explore how your campus can host visiting foreign Fulbright scholars

There is no charge for the workshop. Fulbright campus representatives and interested faculty are encouraged to attend.
