NIGMS’ Postbaccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) [R25]

***This program is limited in the number of applications that can be submitted by the university. If you are interested in applying to this program, please contact Dr. David Pramer of ORSP (pramer@orsp.rutgers.edu or 932-1050 x3027) or Mary Feldenkreiss (felden@orsp.rutgers.edu or 732-932-0150 x3015) with questions about the internal peer review process. See the ORSP website for internal deadlines - http://orsp.rutgers.edu/limited.php.

The objective of the PREP is to encourage individuals from underrepresented groups, who have recently obtained their baccalaureate degrees, to complete Ph.D. degrees in biomedically relevant sciences through extensive academic enhancements and research experience. For the purposes of this program announcement, recent baccalaureate graduates are those who have graduated from an accredited U.S. college or university no more than 36 months prior to applying to a PREP and are not currently enrolled in a degree program. It is anticipated that this program would lead to a steady supply of exceptional Ph.D.-bound students from underrepresented groups. An added benefit of the PREP is that some of the participants might eventually become the scientists who conduct research on cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, respiratory diseases, HIV and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases, substance abuse, and other areas that address reducing health disparities. In order to increase their acceptance into highly selective graduate programs, PREP participants will receive extensive research training and academic preparation through a one-year apprenticeship, to further develop their scholarly potential and improve their research skills.

This award provides $500,000 over a period of five years ($100,000 per year). The Burroughs Wellcome Fund will offer up to 14 awards this year. The goal of the program is to provide opportunities for accomplished investigators still early in their careers to study the pathogenesis of infectious disease at its most fundamental level—the points where human and microbial systems connect. The program supports research that sheds light on overarching problems in this encounter: how colonization, infection, commensalism and other relationships play out at levels ranging from molecular interactions to systemic ones.

The sponsor provides funding to recognize those networking with others and are dedicated to digital learning through blogs, social networking, social bookmarking, podcasting, world-building environments (such as Second Life), or other on-line communities.
Objectives
Knowledge-networking is “do-it-yourself” field-building, collective matchmaking across communities of those who have and those who seek information, so that each can teach and learn from the other. Applicants will already be networking with others and are dedicated to digital learning through blogs, social networking, social bookmarking, podcasting, world-building environments (such as Second Life), or other on-line communities.

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation
Digital Media and Learning--Innovation Awards Program

The sponsor provides funding to appeal to pioneers, builders of new digital learning environments. These might include, for example, a major adaptation of gaming, world building, or social networking environments (such as MySpace or Facebook) designed for educational contexts; or entirely new programs. Objectives Innovation projects: explore new digital models of learning that build upon and enhance the informal, networked, and collaborative learning styles of youth today, extending them more broadly; demonstrate new modes of learning; and bridge diverse communities, in most cases reaching across generations and enabling youth (and those who teach them) to learn from one another. Learning environments addressed by Innovation projects include any and all of the emerging contexts used to facilitate learning in a digital age, such as: the physical environment and how it is mediated; learning tools (text-books, toys, technologies); the involvement of peer learners; the role of adults, as well as learning by adults; and the deliberate activities used (i.e., curriculum).

SEM-6641
Department of Energy
Solid State Energy Conversion Alliance (SECA) Coal-Based Systems

The sponsor is seeking applications for an eight-year, three-phase program focused on (1) fuel cell cost reduction ($400/kW fuel cell-based power block by 2010), (2) cell and stack scaling to sizes economically and technically suitable for central power station applications, (3) >100MWe Baseline IGFC System design and analyses, and (4) manufacturing capacity development in support of the Phase II and III deliverables. The project will culminate in the design, fabrication and testing of 10MW of fuel cells. The objectives of Phase I are to design and perform analyses of the Baseline (>100MWe) and Proof of-Concept (POC) Systems, to include concept identification, system definition and cost analyses, resolve any fuel cell barrier issues, initiate manufacturing development, and fabricate and test scaled fuel cells and fuel cell stacks. The objective of Phase II is to further enhance the Baseline System design, perform a detailed design of the POC System, establish cost estimates for the Baseline System power block, and complete commissioning of the fuel cell manufacturing facility required for the Phase III deliverable. Phase II will also require the fabrication and testing of a fuel cell module incorporating fuel cell stacks based upon the Phase I development effort. The objective of Phase III is to fabricate a POC System and conduct longterm testing using coal synthesis gas as the fuel and provide the capability to operate on steamreformed natural gas in the event syngas is not continuously available in order to ensure the integrity of the fuel cell and to minimize cover gas requirements.
