Title: RFA-AA-08-014--Alcohol, AIDS and Liver Disease: Preventable Side-effects of Antiretroviral Therapy (R21)
Full Program:
Website: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AA-08-014.html
Deadline(s): 2/19/2008,3/19/2008
Deadline Note:
Synopsis: The sponsor provides support for research on new preventive and therapeutic approaches to alcohol- and antiretroviral drug- induced liver disease in patients with AIDS. Alcohol consumption is widely acknowledged as a co-factor in the sexual transmission, susceptibility to infection, and progression of HIV; however a relationship between alcohol use in the context of antiretroviral therapy and adverse outcomes, notably liver disease progression, is less recognized. Recent research indicates that inflammatory pathways predominate in alcoholic hepatitis whereas adaptive immunity plays a primary role in viral hepatitis, offering multiple targets for novel preventive and therapeutic interventions. This FOA emphasizes the need to explore new targets and encourages the development of novel preventive and therapeutic interventions that protect the liver from alcohol and antiretroviral drug- induced liver injury. A better understanding of liver disease should translate to improved care for HIV-infected patients, many of whom continue to consume alcohol. This program will use the NIH Exploratory/Developmental (R21) grant mechanism.

Vaccine effectiveness can vary by the age and underlying health status of vaccine recipients and by influenza season, because the match between circulating and vaccine influenza strain changes over time. Due to the changing nature of influenza viruses and vaccine composition, annual estimates of the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine are needed to assess the effects of the U.S. influenza vaccination program and to help guide influenza vaccination policy. In addition, results of annual vaccine effectiveness studies may provide valuable data for future influenza vaccine strain selection decisions and provide a methodological basis for conducting vaccine effectiveness evaluations during an influenza pandemic.

Synopsis: A -- DEVELOPMENT FOR PRECISION ENGAGEMENT AND FIRE CONTROL TECHNOLOGIES

Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division is interested in receiving white papers which offer potential for advancement and improvement of the precision of crew-served weapons and small arms. There is an urgent need for components, systems, or algorithms/software capable of substantially reducing fires error for unguided munitions in small-unit dismounted (foot-mounted) operations, often within challenging urban environments. Both expeditionary warfare and special operations require such components and systems of high accuracy/precision, of minimal size, weight, and power requirements (SWaP), of ruggedness appropriate for the dismounted warfighter, and of cost consistent with widespread military employment. Topics of Interest Responses addressing one or more of these topics are welcome. The following topics are areas of current interest:
1. Topic A ? Weapon aiming technology
The accurate aiming of dismounted weaponry with respect to true north is critical to precision engagement.
2. Topic B ? Wind velocity sensing technology
Lack of precise knowledge of wind velocity severely impacts the precision of unguided munitions.
3. Topic C ? Wind velocity prediction, interpolation, and extrapolation algorithms
Wind velocity sensing will not occur at the precise time and location of a particular shot.
4. Topic D ? Muzzle velocity sensing technology
Lack of precise knowledge of muzzle velocity severely impacts the precision of unguided munitions, substantially contributing to range error.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center is interested in information on the development of structural and manufacturing design and fabrication of highly 3-dimensional aero-hydrofoils and propulsor ducts (shrouds) from composite materials including compositions of metals, glass and/or carbon fibers for large air-cushioned vehicles. The Government is interested in whether there are companies that have the ability to fabricate aero-hydrofoils with sizes up to a duct diameter of nominally 13 feet. The propulsor assembly will need to be structurally sufficient to absorb nominally 5000 kW of Power, and produce nominally 20000 lbs of thrust force. This announcement is being issued to help determine whether the Navy should proceed with a formal broad agency announcement (BAA) or request for proposals (RFP). Should interest be determined sufficient, a formal BAA or RFP may be forthcoming. Offerors should provide as a minimum the following information: (1) capability (including facility, equipment and apparatus, computer hardware and software, and human resources) and experience in the structural and manufacturing design of complex 3-dimensional thick composite structures, (2) capability and experience in manufacturing of thick composites with complex 3-dimensional shapes,(3) rough-order-of-magnitude estimates of the cost to develop these structures, as well as estimated development time frame, and (4) current capability for classified manufacturing.

Title:Molecular Therapy Core Center (P30)
Full Program:http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-DK-07-010.html
Website:
Deadline(s):2/28/2008 (LOI)
Synopsis:The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) invites applications for Core Center grants to support molecular therapy research in order to develop treatments for Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and other genetic diseases of interest to NIDDK. Core Centers provide shared resources to enhance the efficiency and foster collaborations within and among institutions with a strong existing base of funded research relevant to gene transfer and gene correction technologies. Centers will also support a Pilot and Feasibility Program and an Educational Enrichment Program. This ongoing program is intended to foster research toward the goal of developing molecular therapies for the treatment of CF. Therefore, the applicant organization and its partners need to propose a central focus on molecular therapy for Cystic Fibrosis. Because the technologies for gene transfer and gene correction are still evolving, applicants with a strong research base on development of new approaches for these technologies will be at a significant advantage. The approaches for achieving long-term and high level expression of therapeutic genes are common problems facing many genetic diseases. Therefore, Core Center participants may also be developing these approaches for other genetic diseases of interest to NIDDK including genetic endocrine, metabolic, digestive, liver, kidney and hematologic disease.

Title:Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research III (CECCR II)
Full Program:http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-CA-08-004.html
Website:
Deadline(s):1/22/2008 (LOI)
Synopsis:The National Cancer Institute (NCI) invites P50 grant applications for Centers of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research (CECCRs). Communication science plays a critical role both at the individual level (e.g., provider-patient dyad) as well as at the community, societal, and population levels (through traditional mass media and emerging diverse electronic channels). This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) reflects recognition of cancer-related communications as a vital component of the efforts to improve population health. The NIH specialized center (P50) grant mechanism is being used to promote interdisciplinary cancer communication research. For this FOA, the term “interdisciplinary” refers to the strategy of drawing from, and integrating from, two or more academic disciplines, fields, technologies, or departments, in order to develop a greater understanding of a problem that is too complex to be understood by one discipline alone.
Letters of Intent Receipt Date: January 22, 2008 Application Receipt Date: February 22, 2008
