Title:RFA-HD-08-004--Studies of Antimicrobial and Prebiotic Activity of Oligosaccharides (R01)
Full Program:
Website:http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-HD-08-004.html
Deadline(s):10/14/2008,11/14/2008
Deadline Note:
Synopsis:The sponsor provides support for applications from institutions/organizations that propose to elucidate the antimicrobial and prebiotic activities of oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. The goal of this FOA is to stimulate research on how oligosaccharides prevent enteric infections and to develop a new class of antimicrobial therapy to prevent or treat enteric bacterial or viral infections. A key step in reaching this goal is to develop biosynthetic means of producing large enough quantities of oligosaccharides with antimicrobial properties for preclinical tolerance and safety studies and for safety and clinical testing in populations that are exposed to gastrointestinal pathogens. This FOA should also stimulate research on the expression of genes in the host that determine oligosaccharide assembly and linkage. This line of research should lead to a better understanding of the how oligosaccharide binding sites for specific enteric pathogens are synthesized, packaged, transported, and incorporated into the cell membrane of the enterocyte. By knowing more about oligosaccharide structures of pathogen binding sites on the surface of the enterocyte, it may be possible to predict which individuals are susceptible to specific bacterial and viral infections and to develop antimicrobial agents based on oligosaccharide structural mimicry of these pathogen binding sites. This FOA should also encourage research on oligosaccharides that stimulate the proliferation of beneficial intestinal bacteria and the production of short-chain fatty acids, thereby serving to reduce the incidence and severity of enteric infections. Studies on the immunomodulatory effects of various oligosaccharides on the function of the intestinal immune system are also encouraged. This program will use the NIH Research Project (R01) award mechanism.

Full Program: http://www.bwfund.org
Website:
Deadline(s): 4/15/2008
Synopsis: Career Awards at the Scientific Interface (CASI) are intended to foster the early career development of postdoctoral scientists with backgrounds in the physical/computational sciences whose work addresses biological questions and who are dedicated to pursuing a career in academic research. The awards provide up to $500,000 in support over five years to bridge advanced postdoctoral training and the first three years of a future faculty appointment, presumably at a different institution. Applicants are expected to draw upon their training in a scientific field other than biology to propose innovative approaches to answer important questions in the biological sciences. Examples of approaches include, but are not limited to, physical measurement or manipulation of biological phenomena, computer simulation of complex processes in physiological systems, mathematical modeling of self-organizing behavior, building probabilistic tools for medical diagnosis, developing novel imaging tools or biosensors, applying nanotechnology to manipulate cellular systems, predicting cellular responses to topological clues and mechanical forces, and developing a new conceptual understanding of the complexity of living organisms. Proposals that include experimental validation of theoretical models are particularly encouraged. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, statistics, or engineering and be nominated by a degree-granting institution in the United States or Canada. The program is open to U.S. and Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Temporary residents of the United States have limited eligibility. Please be sure to review the brochure for our new nomination and eligibility guidelines.

Title:Alliances for Broadening Participation in STEM (ABP)
Full Program:http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/nsf07566/nsf07566.htm
Website:
Deadline(s):5/15/2008
Synopsis:The Alliances for Broadening Participation in STEM (ABP) solicitation includes the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program, Bridge to the Doctorate (BD) Activity, and the Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program. This portfolio seeks to increase the number of students successfully completing quality degree programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Particular emphasis is placed on transforming STEM education through innovative academic strategies and experiences in support of groups that historically have been underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Pacific Islanders. Managed synergistically, the ABP cluster enables seamless transitions from the STEM baccalaureate to attainment of the doctorate and entry to the STEM professoriate. ABP support begins at the baccalaureate level through the LSAMP program. LSAMP emphasizes development of broad based regional and national alliances of academic institutions, school districts, state and local governments, and the private sector to increase the diversity and quality of the STEM workforce.
Eligible
LSAMP undergraduate students may receive continued support for up to two additional years of STEM graduate study through the Bridge to the Doctorate (BD) Activity. The Bridge to the Doctorate provides significant financial support for matriculating candidates in STEM doctoral programs at eligible alliance sites. Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) furthers the graduate education of underrepresented students through the doctorate level, preparing them for fulfilling opportunities and productive careers as STEM faculty and research professionals. AGEP also supports the transformation of institutional culture to attract and retain STEM doctoral students into the professorate. See program announcement as deadlines vary by program.

Title: Pilot Project Program
Full Program: botanical@pbrc.edu
Contact: David Ribnicky - ribnicky@aesop.rutgers.edu
Deadline(s): LOI due 3/26/2008; Full due 4/9/08
Synopsis: The major objective of this program is to provide research support to test innovative hypotheses involving functional foods/bioactive compoundrelated research and their effects on metabolic pathways leading to obesity, insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes or their comorbidities. In addition, studies related to other chronic diseases and conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, neurological diseases and cancer are welcomed, provided they can be related to the overall theme of the BRC. It is hoped that a Pilot Project Award will generate enough preliminary data for the investigator to obtain research funding by conventional mechanisms (e.g., R21 or R01). We also hope this program will encourage young investigators and more established investigators in other fields to approach problems which are relevant to our understanding of the metabolism and function of bioactive compounds, and increase our understanding of the basic and clinical aspects of bioactive compounds in the prevention, etiology, pathophysiology, and therapy of chronic diseases.
