Effective Grant (Proposal) Writing Strategies: by Dr. Marjorie Piechowski

This three hour workshop will present some practical strategies that will help faculty members to improve their grant applications. The focus will be on skills and concepts that apply to many grant agencies and disciplines, rather than agency-specific instructions and forms. Junior and senior faculty, experienced and novice grant writers, will benefit from attending. The workshop will offer practical strategies that will strengthen grant applications to a variety of agencies. The methods will include lecture, handouts and examples of successful and unsuccessful proposal abstracts. The workshop will offer practical strategies that will strengthen grant applications to a variety of agencies. Topics will include:
 

  • Common components of grant applications and how these components differ between agencies.
  • How grant writing strategies must adapt to these different requirements.
  • Techniques for writing and improving proposal abstracts.
  • How to write about people and things: personnel, consultants, equipment, facilities.
  • Professional writing strategies for editing the proposal narrative.
  • The review process:
    • How the peer review process works.
    • How reviewers are selected.
    • What review processes are used by different agencies.
    • How to write to reviewers.
    • How to read and interpret reviews.
    • How to become a grant reviewer.
    • How applicants can increase their chances of receiving favorable reviews.
