Internal Funding Sources

Research Council Grants

The University Research Council, a committee of faculty and administrators, advises the Vice President for Research on faculty awards which are made as the result of peer review of requests submitted by the faculty for funding of research and other scholarly and creative activities.  The Council also funds research colloquia and provides subvention for scholarly publications.  The Council's programs are financed using State funds. All awards are made on a basis of merit, although priority is given to new faculty members. The Council makes use of faculty consultants to broaden its expertise and assist in the peer review process. Download, print and complete these forms before filing.

Busch Biomedical Grants

The Busch Biomedical Grant program is designed to enhance health-related research at the University and to strengthen the competitive position of faculty members who seek external research funds. Interest income from the Charles and Johanna Busch Bequest is distributed within the University to reflect the stipulations of the Last Will and Testament of Mr. Charles Busch. Included in the distribution of interest are the Waksman Institute of Microbiology, the Bureau of Biological Research and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. The ORSP share is used to support biomedical research performed by full-time faculty members on all Rutgers campuses.

Proposals for funding are solicited annually by the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. The Biomedical Research Advisory Committee, comprised of senior investigators representing different health-related disciplines as well as the various University campuses, evaluates proposals from interested and qualified faculty members. Awards are made on the basis of Busch Grant funding priorities and scientific merit. In selecting proposals to be funded, emphasis is placed on projects that:

  • Support new independent investigators.
  • Establish collaborations between University investigators.
  • Promote pilot research in emerging fields.
  • Request critical but unavailable shared research resources.
  • Promote pilot research in fields new to the investigator.

Applications must be completed and returned to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs on or before April 10, 2008 at 5pm. Decisions regarding the allocation of funds will occur by June 2008. Applicants will receive notification shortly thereafter and awards will be effective July 1, 2008.

Academic Excellence Program

President McCormick announced the creation of the Academic Excellence Fund during his "Address to the University Community" Sept. 19, 2003. The AEF provides seed money to support forward-thinking, interdisciplinary proposals that enhance the university’s primary missions of teaching, research and service.

In selecting proposals to be funded, emphasis is placed on projects that seed development of outstanding new academic initiatives, establish vital core resources or facilities that serve multiple groups, or significantly enhance interdisciplinary activities. Key considerations are whether the project can be leveraged to lead to sustained new academic programs and research projects, and the extent to which the project can not be otherwise funded through regular institutional resources or external funding mechanisms. Initiatives that cut across the boundaries of schools, colleges, and disciplines and that advance novel multidisciplinary interactions and ways of thinking are encouraged. Projects receive dollar awards ranging from about $25,000 to a maximum of $250,000, and can be carried over multiple years. This year’s budget is $1.5 million.
